The gorges are located in the Karijini National Park in the Hamersley Range. This is a vast awe inspiring place. One of the big attractions of Karijini National Park is that its most amazing scenery is within easy reach. You can pull into a car park, walk 50 metres and see waterfalls rushing down 100-metre canyons into cool rock pools
I am describing a 2 day tour here, starting and finishing at the Auski Tourist Village Roadhouse. You will be able to pick up some maps and information at the Roadhouse.
Travel North for about 19 km where you will find a turnoff to the left, leading to Dales Gorge. The road is well sign posted, you will pass a very impressive termite mound before getting to Dales Gorge. Try to arrive at the gorge at around 10 a.m., the colours are very spectacular.
Now I would head North-West past the termite mound and on to Kalamina Gorge. Steps from the car park lead you to a nice pool shaded by river gums. You can take a longer walk through the gorge to Rock Arch Pool. Count on about 3 hour return trip. A walk along the bottom of Kalimina Gorge gives you the chance to take a closer look at the structure and beautiful shades of red and blue in the rocks.
You had a good day, maybe you should return to Auski Tourist village to spend the night there.
If you still have plenty of time, you could move on to Joffre Gorge, further to the North-West and then on to Oxer Lookout.
There is a nice lookout above Joffre Falls, or, if you have spare time, go down a steeper path to the bottom of the gorge. From Joffre Gorge Lookout you can see deep down into the gorge. A curved wall forms a natural amphitheatre and after rain, a waterfall plunges down its face creating an amazing site.
Oxer Lookout offer good views of some of the most spectacular scenery in Karijini National Park. The Lookout offers you a 360-degree view of Red Gorge, Weano Gorge, Joffre Gorge and Hancock Gorge. There are some interesting walking tracks from the car park. Please let the ranger know if your are planning to enter some of the gorges.
From Oxer Lookout head back along Joffre Falls Road towards Mount Bruce. It is Western Australia’s second highest mountain. It offers one of the Western Australia's most scenic walks, giving you stunning views all the way to its 1165 metre summit. A walking track leads to the top, takes about 3 hours return. From there, you can move on to Tom Price, where you could spend the night, if you wish.
You can then travel directly from Tom Price to Hamersley Gorge. The gorge lies at the end of a short turn-off to the right. The look-out provides a good view of the area, best enjoyed in the afternoon light.
At the bottom of the gorge is a lovely pool, you can reach it walking down some steps from the car park.
Returning from the gorge, you can head to Wittenoom, visit the Wittenoom Gorge and Yampire Gorge before returning to Auski Tourist Village.
I believe this is a very enjoyable trip through the Pilbara Gorges. Please take note of all the signs. Stay on the walking tracks and let the ranger know if you enter some of the gorges.
